Our client, a leading South African mobile telecom provider, is looking for a General Manager -IT Infrastructure.

The Mission/ Core purpose of the Job
The General Manager: IT Infrastructure is accountable for the IT Infrastructure vision, strategy and value, realisation management across MTN Group with attention to the infrastructure evolution towards cloud capabilities and convergence of infrastructure for IT and network workloads. The role is responsible for defining the target infrastructure landscape, articulate the roadmap and oversee the delivery plans to support business processes and services across the enterprise through the effective leadership and orchestration of people, products, partners and relevant processes.
Key area of focus is the development of robust relationships with all the relevant stakeholders to support the transformation agenda across the various Business units.

The General Manager: Infrastructure will be accountable to achieve the following objectives:
  • Sets the Infrastructure mission and vision to foster a business-oriented culture and mindset,
  • Leads the development of the IT infrastructure technology and data centre strategy and associated execution roadmap,
  • Defines the Cloud adoption strategy and leads the cloud transformation program,
  • Owns the creation and execution of the digital workplace strategy including collaboration, automation, service and asset management,
  • Provides implementation leadership working with the Technology teams in Group and Opcos on the plans and the governance required to prioritize resources (including budget), optimize returns on investments (e.g. via automation, cost optimization and quality management) and ensure the delivery of the agreed outcomes,
  • Provides strategic direction, guidance and oversight for the infrastructure architecture, engineering and operations (incl capacity planning) activities,
  • Oversees Infrastructure Capex and Opex across Group and OpCos,
  • Enables innovation and seeks to leverage the relevant technology trends (e.g. Robotic Process automation (RPA), artificial intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), blockchain, edge computing) that can create value consistent with the strategic goals of the Business
  • Works closely with the Group Supply Chain Management towards the appropriate sourcing, strategy, supports cost optimization and license agreement initiatives, leads technical assessments of Group Request For Proposals, supports OpCos’ infrastructure procurement, activities and runs the strategic vendor and partner relationship management for key providers.
Key Deliverables
  • Maintain the portfolio of the approved infrastructure partners
  • Provide thought leadership and guidance to the Cloud COE
  • Deliver on the agreed Cloud transformation initiatives (e.g. 7R disposition for key applications in conjunction with the technology strategy team, migration of selected existing workloads to cloud in a cost-effective manner, cloud native application roadmap for new applications)
  • Deliver and oversee the operation of on-premise virtualized infrastructure to host Telco and IT workloads.
  • Manage the IT requirements of Manco (e.g. hardware infrastructure, end user computing, collaboration and office environment and others)
  • Manage and evolve the operating model to be aligned with continuous evolution in the Business needs and way of working
  • Drive the development and adoption of standards relevant to the on-premise infrastructure and cloud infrastructure across the organization.
Professional background
The candidates have to be EE eligible.

Education:
  • Minimum 4-year Academic Degree with Honours (B Eng / BSc Degree Preferred)
  • MBA / Masters advantageous
  • English, French and Arabic (as advantage)
Experience:
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in telecommunications industry
  • Minimum 6 – 10 years of Senior Management Experience
  • Minimum 5 years of Technology Infrastructure experience
  • Cloud technology and migration experience would advantageous
  • Process Digitisation experience would advantageous
  • Experience in drafting policies.
  • Work across diverse cultures and geographies
  • Proven track record of business improvement.
