Are there any cases of using the indoor location of mobile phones to provide insights on how large buildings are used?
I am looking for cases where a large building/complex can get occupancy rates at the room level using indoor tracking data.

Hi
your question is not clear enough could you clarify more?
The simplest and cost effective solution is using the WiFi connection request from smartphones to repeaters
Hi Victor, do you know of any commercially available solutions using Wifi based positioning? Thanks
WiFi based positioning systems should be able to provide this information.
If you have a DAS system (indoor base station with a distributed antenna system) you can then get from the CDRs all distinct MSISDNs that were attached as long as they were active with a data sessions which is very common for smartphones.
Hi Luis, would a DAS based solution have to be provided by the mobile operator? Thanks
I confirm that wi fi hot spot can provide you the information on rooms usage if the topology of the network is dense enough to disambiguate the areas where hot spots radio coverage overlap each other. A well designed DAS can resolve with with an acceptable accuracy but the best results can be achieved with the hel of ML algorithms based also on path loss estimation (both downlink and uplink) of the devices attached to the wi fi network
Thanks for the answer. Are there any commercially available solutions to do this over wifi? Are they equipment vendor specific or do they work with different wifi network vendors? Thanks!
Hi Hugo, that’s correct. If you are not working for a Telco or have no relationship to one, then the Wi-Fi solution being discussed is your best bet, but phones don’t always have the Wi-Fi on and they don’t attach automatically to Wi-Fi networks so the data will only capture a % of the people in and out.
Hi Hugo. In my opinion Commscope solutions are very complete. An interesting treatment of in building devices tracking can be found at https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1155/2015/429104
Based on your problem statement I would suggest you to try ip.access solution called pressenceSensor (https://www.ipaccess.com/en/presence/presenceSensor). Of course, as usually there are number of caveats but it should work…they have flavors with BLE/WiFi/3G and latest with 4G!
Thanks, guys, that was very helpful
Apple maps does e.g. ins imports, but not translating these data back and building correlations from it. If you want to apply it within your company or for commercial purposes within a building you will face massive privacy concerns and issues. That tracking will never be fully safe and anonymous, and so you can not separate private life and privacy rights of people from business interests. You shouldn’t even think that way…

Hi, we are using https://www.ituma.eu/en/aduno-wifi-solutions-services/ for managed wifi services offered by a telco. platform has capabilities to create heat maps based on the wifi request of smartphones (as already mentioned anywhere here). you can see some pictures of how it looks on the middle of the page. regards, sebastian
Hi Hugo, I am currently working in a huge organization. Here we put in place some solutions in order to guide guest thru all the buildings and meeting rooms. Feel free contact me.
Hi Hugo, Wifi & Indoor BTS solutions have already been covered in the thread. There are RFID based smart tags available, which can contain a user profile and can be used to track user behavior in large covered spaces such as stalls actually visited in an exhibition, more visited/less visited areas, room occupancy in a hotel etc. These tags cost $2-7 a piece and come with a cloud based analytics solutions as well. Lets me know if you need more details
