If you ask for viable, genuine 5G automotive use cases, I am afraid but there aren’t any that I know of. Given that 5G infrastructure is just being rolled out it shouldn’t come as a surprise that we have not seen anything specific.

That said, you will find many test beds where consortia are trying to figure out what to do with 5G, such as Airspan teaming up with McLaren in the UK and others. It might be worth getting in touch with these folks for a sensible discussion.

Another good reference point is the 5G Automotive Association. This was originally founded by the major German automotive manufacturers and global telco players. These guys will give you a dose of realistic view of what is technologically possible in V2X.

Of course, most of the tier-1 automotive suppliers have 5G somewhere on their roadmaps but the fact is that almost all use cases will be perfectly happy with a decent 4G connection. Or, as a contact at BMW put it to me the other day: “Already we can support CAV-type use cases over the current networks. The main thing that 5G brings is the ability to provide a better user experience because we can shovel more data back and forth at faster speeds.”

Yes its Connected Vehicles. Autonomous will demand non-network, car to car communication, that means either non-cellular or a 2 year wait while the 5G guys demonstrate how they can do device to device which then means car to car.

However car to infrastructure to car does make sense, if the outside world can talk to the car then perhaps we won’t need traffic lights, road signs, speed cameras, etc.

Google maps today already has speed limit information and all the routing you need, now add 5G with AR on a head-up display on the windscreen - perfect.

The only 5G-worth application is 4K video streaming ! All other applications are 3G-enough…..
