I am not sure I entirely understand your question.
If your major concern is about whether it is wise (and secure) to invest in IoT, I suggest your first point of call are the numerous industry analysts that have mapped out market potential, the competitive situation and cost structures for quite some years now.
What has changed just recently is that more emphasis has been given to the backend as some of the more traditional IT suppliers and system integrators (Microsoft, SAP, Amazon, IBM, Accenture etc.) have realised that their cloud offerings could well play a role in this segment.
Whilst these companies try are after a “platform play” the IoT market is comparatively fragmented owing to the diverse nature of the IoT devices (ranging anything from low-cost, dumb sensors to high sophisticated surveillance cameras etc.). Here it will be challenging to pick clear winners and make “secure” investments.
If your concern was security of IoT then I would not be too scared. Securing IoT devices and ecosystems is not more complicated than securing your corporate IT network. In fact, in many cases it will be easier, as most IoT devices will be comparatively simplistic. Also, in most use cases you will assume that a licensed service provider will add an additional layer of security where IoT traffic will go through a network that can control bandwidth (e.g. network slicing) and subscription / access credentials. The majority of security breaches into IoT devices that are known so far pertain to “human errors” such as not changing factory settings for passwords and usernames, which then opens the door for hackers to take control over the device.
Robert, see my article about IoT security under my profile Peter Liss on Linkedin. The article covers the topic in depth.
