Description
Our client, an Internet, and other Telecommunications services provider, is looking for an experienced data engineer/manager to join the company as a Business Intelligence consultant with a potential transition to join the team as a full time employee. He will be reporting to the CFO and will focus on shaping and advancing to the next level the BI function of the company.

Objectives and Responsibilities

Management: The Data Engineer plays a managerial role leading a small team of business analysts, responsible for day-to-day support of the data warehouse and business intelligence reports, and the troubleshooting and improvement of existing procedures and processes. He possesses strong project management skills and defines and promotes the department’s best practices and design principles for data warehousing techniques and architecture. The Data Engineer additionally strives to improve data organization and accuracy. In this capacity, he monitors and troubleshoots data quality and performance issues and assists in the development of business intelligence reports, as well as data governance standards.

Strategy: The Data Engineer should have a strategic and forward-looking mindset, able to work on day-to-day requirements and on planning future needs. He plays a key role in technological decision making for the business’s future data, analysis, and reporting needs. It is also the role of the Data Engineer to guide the business in identifying any new data needs and deliver mechanisms for acquiring and reporting such information.

Design/Development/Operations: In this capacity, the Data Engineer designs and develops systems for the maintenance of the business’s data warehouse, ETL processes, and business intelligence reports. He designs and supports the databases and table schemas for new and existing data sources for the data warehouse. He additionally creates the ETL processes and operates them in order to facilitate the ingestion of data into the warehouse using current technology stack:

  • Google Big Query as the data warehouse
  • Apache Airflow for ETL workflow and scheduling
  • ETL scripts in Python
  • BI reports and dashboards in Google Data Studio and Microsoft Power BI

Collaboration: The role that the Data Engineer plays is highly collaborative and, as such, he works closely with data analysts, data scientists, and other data consumers within the business in an attempt to gather and populate data warehouse table structure, which is optimized for reporting. The Data Engineer also works closely with other disciplines/departments and teams across the business in coming up with simple, functional, and elegant solutions that balance data needs across the business.

Business Analysis: The Data Engineer plays an analytical role in quickly and thoroughly analyzing business requirements for reporting and analysis and subsequently translating the emanating results into good technical data designs that serve business strategy and objectives. The Data Engineer demonstrates expertise in the areas of business requirements management, data architecture, and business process intelligence.

Communication Skills: Excellent communication skills and fluency in English, both spoken and written, are a must-have for the Data Engineer. These skills will be necessary for facilitating the clear conveyance of complex technical communications in cross-functional settings to both technical and non-technical parties. Comfortable and capable in dealing with senior executives (internal & external) in a proven stakeholder management approach.

Communication skills will, for example, be necessary for the drafting of clear and understandable data designs, and the clear articulation and documentation of reporting processes that will apply across the business. The adherence to these processes and their maintenance will be highly dependent on the clarity with which they are described and conveyed by the Data Engineer.

Knowledge Sharing: The Data Engineer is also tasked with gathering and maintaining best practices that can be adopted in data processing and sharing across the business. It is also the Data Engineer’s duty to provide technical expertise to the business on business intelligence data architecture and on the democratization of data assets. In this capacity, the Data Engineer establishes the documentation of enterprise data assets in a Data Catalog and Business Glossary and maintains technical specification documentation for all reports and processes.

Other Duties: The Data Engineer plays similar duties as he deems fit for the proper execution of his duties and duties as delegated by the CFO, Senior BI Manager, or Data Governance committee.


Professional background

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Information Systems, Statistics, or any other related field.
  • Master’s degree in BI/Data Management or similar a plus.
  • 10+ years in Business Intelligence and Data Management and Advanced Data Analytics
  • SQL Coding
  • Experience working with ETL tools
  • Dimensional modelling and other data warehousing techniques
  • Data warehouse development and architecture and hands-on physical and logical database designing
  • Experience working with cloud-based data warehouse projects
  • Knowledge of Power BI or any similar business analytics platforms
  • Proficient in a scripting/programming language such as Python, R, and so forth
  • Fluency in Spanish and English

Interpersonal Skills: The Data Engineer has to be an individual with a positive can-do attitude, be open and welcoming to change, be a self-starter and be self-motivated, have an insatiable thirst for knowledge, be proactive and go beyond the call of duty, take accountability for business performance, have innovative problem-solving skills, be a creative and strategic thinker, and have an ability to remain calm and composed in times of stress and uncertainty.

People Skills: The Data Engineer must have the ability to establish strong, meaningful, and lasting relationships with others. He will be approachable and likeable inspiring trust and a feeling of dependability in others, hence, giving more credibility to his insights and directives in the view of collaborating personnel, senior management, and his colleagues.
