I will recommend studying TOGAF as this is open source. For paid training best out there for me is SAFe for Architecte
Hi Evgeniya, the main challenge is the certificate. Most known certifications come at a price. But if you just want to lern, go online and check. There are hundreds of ppl doing YouTube sessions etc
Hi Evgeniya, I would start with the TOGAF, if you register you can download the guide for free on trial and study both the foundation and practitioner, this will give you a good grounding in EA, hopefully you will find a niche within to specialise in.
Hi Evgeniya, TOGAF would be the apt one…....There are so many online video also in youtube you can refer them and learn. But mind it, its only a limited knowledge. Its always better to start an online course or a instructor guided course….
Hi Evgeniya, you can start with a course in LinkedIN Learning as https://www.linkedin.com/learning/enterprise-architecture-foundations/pursuing-an-architecture-position which you will get for free due to 1st month trail. But eventually you will have to spend lot of time in TOGEF for certification. Once you start exploring you will get so many courses online that you may not have to take any classroom training. And EA practice need lot of experience, it cannot come by training’s:)
Hi. I would suggest you to start with TOGAF course. TOGAF is an open source certification and introduced and owned by The Open Group. Its better to get training through The Open Group partners. Additionally, TOGAF requires decent architecture experience in one of the tech areas.
Hope this helps. BR, Furqan
Hey Evgeniya, I’d also like to throw my hat into the ring to answer your interesting question.
1/ firstly, I’d like to strongly agree with Dharamraj ‘s last sentence (who I do not know, for the record ;) . The teacher/course you REALLY want and need is experience. More on that later.
2/ Training on SAFe has been mentioned, while that is a good skill to have, it is only of very partial usefulness when you talk EA : basically when you have several scrum teams in parallel implementing stuff on your project, most of the fundamental EA work has already been done, so SAFe won’t help you there.
3/ TOGAF has been mentioned by previous contributors, and TOGAF is good to know. All the elements and activities that TOGAF prescribes is what you will need as an EA. However, and this is where the “more on that later” part starts :
- think of TOGAF as a cooking recipe : a famous French 3* chef gives you the written instructions for his/her most famous menu. When you cook it for the first time, how likely will all the dishes be as tasty as the original, will they all be warm and come in the right timing? The answer is “probably not” (read: no way). This is not because you don’t try hard, some things are just based on experience. If part of our example is “sea urchin soup”, the chef (aka TOGAF) will tell you “buy 5 sea urchins” - so when you’re on the market for the 1st time, how do you distinguish a fresh from an old or rotten sea urchin?—> you’re already screwed at step 1 of the recipe ...
- to illustrate this with two examples somewhat closer to actual TOGAF: the method states you need to define a “good” business architecture. While that is totally correct, how does a good business architecture look in telecommunications? Does it look the same for a system that runs the logistics chains of an airport? TOGAF will prepare you to plan this step, but will not tell you HOW to do it. As an EA, your customer will look to get that expertise from you (otherwise no need to hire an external expert), so by definition, if you don’t know this, nobody on your job will. A telco or an airport IT job will cost 10s or 100s of millions of $. So getting this right is a very large responsibility, it is on the EA to carry it. 2nd example: TOGAF tells you to plan for data migration. Once again, this is totally correct, unless you’re in a startup and a greenfield implementation, you will need to push some existing data from the old to the new system. This will happen in a phased approach, or big bang, you will potentially exploit the old and the new system in // for a while to compare e.g. the invoices generated. Maybe some or all of your data will be on a cloud solution by a 3rd party provider. Do you fully trust your data being with somebody else, or require/implement some permanent data backup on local systems to be sure to always being able to recover your customers most important assets? In short, there will be multiple ways to do this, with benefits and risks. You need to break those down for your customer, depending on the business and the industry you’re in : TOGAF won’t do this, experience will.
Conclusion, my recommendation would be to choose an industry or two, know that this will take time and start with the “right” jobs that will build your EA experience over time.
The “best jobs” to do so, i.e. the jobs where you learn fastest (in my totally personal opinion :) are those where you connect business and IT aspects of large projects.
- e.g. a product owner, you relate what the business wants to the technical guys. Make sure to understand what they do
- business analyst, where you write business and systems specifications. Firstly understand what the business wants. Is this “same same no different” from what they did before, is there real business benefit? Describe business processes which can actually be tested. Make sure you verify that those are properly mapped in technical specs. Asks questions until you have the whole chain under control
- tester and test manager (yes yes, this is a great job): you will read a lot of specs, generate business data, control data coherency and see what the application really does. If it does weird things, consider it an opportunity to learn. Always dive into the technical details.
Then keep accumulating the jobs and the EA knowledge will come - free of charge.
Hi Evgeniya have a look to edx.com part of Harvarc and MIT but also partner of many US uni versities. Many courses are free.
Evgeniya, look at https://docs.microsoft.com/en-gb/learn/?WT.mc_id=learningbanner_homepage-banner-wwl as a start, these are free and will at least be a good start and you will then know the direction to take, like Azure and O365
